Eugene Dennis
Eugene Dennis (born August 10, 1905 in Seattle as Francis Xavier Waldron , † January 31, 1961 in New York City ) was an American politician of the Communist Party of the USA , he was its general secretary from 1945 to 1959 and chairman of it Was 1959 until his death in 1961.
Life
Childhood and youth
Dennis was adopted, so he had to give up his maiden name Francis Xavier Waldron and take on his new one, Eugene Dennis. Early in his life he became a member of the CPUSA and the Industrial Workers of the World , for whom he also organized the first strikes in California.
Party career
Dennis succeeded Earl Browder as general secretary of the CPUSA and held that office until he lost to Gus Hall in 1959 . Dennis then became chairman of the party, although this post was traditionally seen as less important in communist parties . Hall's candidate for a fight was considered controversial, as an orderly transfer of top positions was often preferred.
