Eulychnia castanea is a species of plant in the genus Eulychnia from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Eulychnia castanea has a shrubby growth, reaches heights of up to 1 meter and forms dense cushions of several meters in diameter. The cylindrical shoots are green, 1 to 2 meters long (rarely longer) and have a diameter of 6 to 8 centimeters. There are 8 to 12 ribs . The areoles on it are felted in dark gray. The thorns emerging from them are yellow to brown. The 1 to 2 strong central spines are 3 to 10 centimeters, the 6 to 10 radial spines 0.5 to 2 centimeters long.

The white flowers appear laterally near the shoot tips and are 5 to 5.5 inches long. Your pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with stiff, brown bristles and brown felted areoles. The spherical, yellow (to green) fruits are covered with thorns that fall off slightly when fully ripe.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

The distribution area of Eulychnia castanea extends in the Coquimbo region from Talinay to Los Molles directly along the coast. The first description was in 1864 by Rudolph Amandus Philippi .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
