Euna Lee

Euna Lee (also Lee Seung-un ; Korean 이승은) (* 1972 ) is an American journalist born in South Korea who has worked for Current TV since 2005 . She was best known for her arrest by North Korea, her subsequent sentence to twelve years in a labor camp, and the pardon by Kim Jong-il .

Life

Euna Lee was born and raised in South Korea . She came to the USA to study at the Academy of Art University , from which she graduated with a bachelor's degree in film and broadcasting. She is married to actor Michael Saldate and they have a daughter.

The arrest in North Korea in 2009

Lee and her colleague, journalist Laura Ling , were detained in North Korea in 2009 after allegedly crossing the border into North Korea from China without a visa . The United States government protested the sentencing of twelve years in a labor camp and took diplomatic steps to obtain the release of Lee and Ling. After a lightning humanitarian visit by former US President Bill Clinton on August 4, 2009, both were pardoned by Kim Jong-il on the same day.
