Euphilotes battoides - Square-spotted Blue (, Lined Bluebird ') or Buckwheat blue (, Buchweizenbläuling') - is a Butterfly -Art from the family of Gossamer (Lycaenidae), which is native to western North America.

description

Their wingspan is between 16 and 17 mm depending on the species and subspecies. The top of the females is often brown with an orange stripe on the edge of the outer hind wing. The males are blue with a dark hem. Only some have the orange stripe. The underside is white to gray with black spots. The annual adult generation flies between mid-April and August. They feed on the flower nectar of various plants, mostly species of the 'North American wild buckwheat' ( Eriogonum ).

Ecology and way of life

The larvae feed on flowers and fruits of the genus Eriogonum . The subspecies battoides was on lobbii Eriogonum var. Lobbii , Eriogonum incanum and Eriogonum polypodum discovered while the subspecies Glaucon to Eriogonum umbellatum , Eriogonum ovalifolium var. Nivale , Eriogonum heracleoides , Eriogonum sphaerocephalum var. Halimioides and flavum Eriogonum var. Piperi specializes; the subspecies comstocki on Eriogonum umbellatum . The subspecies allyni was discovered on Eriogonum parvifolium var. Parvifolium , Eriogonum cinereum and Eriogonum fasciculatum var. Fasciculatum . The larvae can be looked after by ants. The species overwinters pupates in the sand or leaves .

Occurrence

Euphilotes battoides are native to western North America between the US state of Washington and south to Baja California Norte and west to the south of Colorado and New Mexico .
