Hans Hermann Behr

Hans Hermann Behr (born August 18, 1818 in Koethen (Anhalt) ; † March 6, 1904 in San Francisco ; also Hans Herman Behr ) was a German physician, botanist and entomologist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Behr ".

Life

Behr studied medicine in Halle an der Saale and Berlin . There he received his doctorate in 1843 and then went on extensive research trips to Australia, Asia and Africa, which lasted until 1845. Behr collected there previously unknown plants and insects and categorized them.

Because of his participation in the revolution of 1848 , he had to leave his Prussian homeland in a rush that same year. First he returned to Australia before emigrating to the USA in 1850. He first practiced as a doctor in San Francisco and taught as a botany professor at the California College of Pharmacy there , to whose vice president he rose from 1887 to 1888. Behr later became procurator of the California Academy of Sciences . In 1894 he retired .

Hans Behr also appeared as a poet and novelist. Hermann H. Behr Avenue in San Francisco is named after him.

Since 1839 he was a member of the then Corps Marchia Halle and Moenania .
