The Colony and Protectorate Sierra Leone ( English Sierra Leone Colony and Protectorate ) was a British colony with a protectorate and existed from 1808 to 1961. The crown colony with the capital Freetown was founded in 1808.
On October 17, 1821, the colony became part of British West Africa and served as the capital of this area . On August 31, 1896, the Freetown hinterland became a protectorate .
In 1961, Sierra Leone was granted independence as a Commonwealth Realm . In 1971 the country became a republic.
