Euphorbia aggregata is a species of the genus spurge ( Euphorbia ) in the family of Euphorbiaceae (Euphorbiaceae).
description
The succulent Euphorbia aggregata is a dwarf shrub that forms a flat cushion up to 7.5 cm in height through multiple branching of the main shoot and twigs at ground level. The upright branches measure 2 to 3 cm in diameter and are eight to nine-edged in cross-section. The sides of the shoot tips are interspersed with triangular pits that grow out with age. Fresh shoots are grass-green, older sections turn brown.
The thorns are single and unevenly distributed on the edges. They consist of woody flower stalks 6 to 8 mm long. At first the thorns are reddish or purple, with age they turn brown. The rudimentary leaves are very short-lived. The approximately 6 to 8 mm long stalked, unisexual cyathia are dark purple-red or green and sit individually on the branch ends.
Distribution and systematics
Euphorbia aggregata is common in the South African province of Eastern Cape .
The first description of Euphorbia aggregata was in 1907 by Alwin Berger . Some authors use Euphorbia aggregata A. Berger as a synonym for Euphorbia pulvinata Marloth. A distinction is made between the following varieties:
- Euphorbia aggregata var. Aggregata
- Euphorbia aggregata var. Alternicolor (NEBr.) ACWhite
