Euphorbia atroflora is a species of the genus spurge ( Euphorbia ) in the family of Euphorbiaceae (Euphorbiaceae).
description
The succulent Euphorbia atroflora forms shrubs with strong branching and is up to 2.5 meters high. The four to five-edged shoots are 2 to 3 centimeters thick and are green in color. The shoots are divided into 10 to 20 centimeters long sections by constrictions. At the edges there are arc-shaped thorns at a distance of 1 to 2 centimeters from each other. The thorn shields form a horn rim about 3 millimeters wide. Strong thorns up to 1 centimeter in length are formed on the lower branches and 2 to 3 millimeters in length on the upper branches. The stipule spines are very small.
The solitary and simple cymen are almost sitting. The dark red cyathia are 5 millimeters in size and the elliptical, butting nectar glands are colored blood red. The clearly lobed fruit is dark red and about 3.5 millimeters wide and 5.5 millimeters long. It stands on a handle about 5 millimeters long and bent back. The spherical seed becomes about 2 millimeters in size and is covered with flat warts.
Distribution and systematics
Euphorbia atroflora is widespread in the northeast of Kenya on stony slopes with gappy shrub growth at altitudes of 900 to 1760 meters.
The species was first described in 1987 by Susan Carter Holmes .
