The succulent Euphorbia atrox grows from a fibrous root and forms cushions up to 30 centimeters high and 40 centimeters in diameter. The short shoots are 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters thick and are covered with clearly raised warts that are at a distance of up to 1.5 centimeters from each other. The warts are arranged in 5 rows that spiral around the shoot. The elongated thorn shields sit above the warts, stand individually and are up to 10 millimeters long and 3.5 millimeters wide. Strong thorns up to 2.5 centimeters in length are formed.
The inflorescence is formed by one to three simple cymes in a vertical line . They stand on a 1 millimeter long handle. The cyathia are 3.5 millimeters in size and the triangular, adjoining nectar glands are colored yellow. The clearly lobed fruit is 2.7 millimeters long and 3.7 millimeters wide. It stands on a 4 millimeter long and bent back handle. The egg-shaped seed becomes about 2 millimeters in size and is covered with very small warts.
