Euphorbia ballyi is a species of the genus spurge ( Euphorbia ) in the family of Euphorbiaceae (Euphorbiaceae). The species was named after Peter René Oscar Bally .

description

The succulent Euphorbia ballyi grows as a very densely branched shrub to a height of 1.5 meters. The four- to six-sided shoots are deeply winged and are up to 7 centimeters wide. By constrictions, they are divided into sections up to 4 centimeters long, and at the edges there are teeth that are up to 1.5 centimeters apart. The thorn shields are united to a 3 to 5 millimeter wide horn rim. Strong thorns up to 2.5 centimeters long are formed. The stipule spines are very small and in addition to the inflorescences there are other thorns up to 2.5 millimeters long.

The inflorescence is made up of single, simple cymes on a stalk up to 7 millimeters long. The cyathia become 10 millimeters in size. The elliptical nectar glands are colored yellow and border each other. The ovary is surrounded by an inflorescence covered with teeth, which consists of three lobes. The bluntly lobed and almost sedentary fruit is about 7 millimeters long and 11 millimeters wide. It is more or less purple in color. The egg-shaped seed is about 3 millimeters in size and is smooth.

Distribution and systematics

Euphorbia ballyi is widespread in north-east Somalia on rocky limestone slopes with little shrubbery at altitudes of 1340 to 2000 meters.

The species was first described in 1963 by Susan Carter Holmes .
