The succulent Euphorbia barnardii forms small shrubs up to 75 centimeters in height. A large number of above-ground branches are formed from a tuberous root that turns into shoots below the surface of the earth. These are five- to six-sided and with constrictions divided into 10 cm long and 7 cm wide sections. The slightly winged edges are set with flat teeth, which are at a distance of 1 centimeter from each other. The united thorn shields form a horn edge. It developed thorns up to 1 centimeter long. The stipule spines are very small and there are other very small spines on both sides of the inflorescences.

The inflorescence consists of single and simple cymes , which stand on 1 millimeter long stems. The cyathia are up to 9 millimeters in size. The elongated nectar glands are colored yellow and touch each other. The bluntly lobed fruit is almost sessile and becomes 9 millimeters in size. Nothing is known about the seed.
