Euphorbia beharensis is a species of the genus spurge ( Euphorbia ) in the family of Euphorbiaceae (Euphorbiaceae).

description

The succulent Euphorbia beharensis forms shrubs with plenty of branching and thin shoots up to 5 millimeters thick. The leaves at the tips of the shoots are egg-shaped and are up to 8 millimeters long and 4 millimeters wide. The leaf margin is slightly wavy and the short-lived leaves have almost no stem. The up to 1.5 centimeter long stipple spines have a strongly thickened base and are at a distance of up to 1 centimeter from each other.

The inflorescence consists of two- to three-fold bifurcated cymes , which stand on a stalk about 10 millimeters long. The cyathophylls are spread out and the cyathia are 2 millimeters in size. The nectar glands are two-lipped and the ovary is egg-shaped. Nothing is known about the fruits and seeds.

Distribution and systematics

Euphorbia beharensis is endemic to the south of Madagascar . The species is on the IUCN Red List and is considered endangered (Vulnerable).

The species was first described in 1946 by Jacques Désiré Leandri . However, this description was invalid and Leandri himself corrected it in 1953.

A distinction is made between the following varieties:

  • Euphorbia beharensis var. Adpressifolia Rauh ; the leaves are curved away from the shoots and the cymes are on very short stems
  • Euphorbia beharensis var. Beharensis
  • Euphorbia beharensis var. Guillemetii (Ursch & Leandri) Rauh ( Syn . : Euphorbia guillemetii Ursch & Leandri (1955)); the thorns are only 3 to 8 millimeters long and the leaves 12 millimeters long and 4 millimeters wide
  • Euphorbia beharensis var. Squarrosa roughness ; the leaves are up to 2 centimeters long, the thorns up to 5 millimeters long, the stalk of the cymes up to 1.5 centimeters long and the cyathia are smaller
  • Euphorbia beharensis var. Truncata Rauh ; the leaves are obovate and have truncated tips, they are up to 1.5 inches long and 2 inches wide
