Euphorbia californica is a species of the genus spurge ( Euphorbia ) in the family of Euphorbiaceae (Euphorbiaceae).
description
The succulent Euphorbia californica forms bare shrubs up to 1 meter in height. The somewhat succulent shoots are 1 to 2 centimeters thick. The egg-shaped leaves appear on the short side shoots and are about 2.5 inches long and 2.25 inches wide. They are slightly succulent and have a thin stem about 2 centimeters long.
The inflorescence consists of four to eight cyathia in clusters , which appear at the shoot tips. The individual cyathia reach a diameter of 6 millimeters and are located on a stalk about 5 millimeters long. The nectar glands have petal-like, two- to three-lobed processes that are 0.5 millimeters long and 1.25 millimeters wide. The bluntly lobed fruit is 6 millimeters in size and stands on a stalk up to 7 millimeters long, protruding and bent back. It contains the 4 millimeter large seed.
Distribution and systematics
Euphorbia californica is common in the Mexican states of Baja California and Sonora .
The species was first described in 1844 by George Bentham .
A distinction is made between the following varieties:
- Euphorbia californica var. Californica
- Euphorbia californica var. Hindsiana (Benth.) Wiggins (1955); In contrast to the stem species, the leaves are thicker and leathery, the petiole about 6 millimeters long and the extensions on the nectar glands are 1 millimeter by 1.5 millimeters larger. A synonym for this variety is Euphorbia hindsiana Benth. (1844).
