Euphorbia cassythoides is a species of the genus spurge ( Euphorbia ) in the family of Euphorbiaceae (Euphorbiaceae).
description
The succulent Euphorbia cassythoides forms bare shrubs up to 2 meters high. The cylindrical branches are woody and stand in whorls at the nodes . They are about 3 millimeters thick and have five to seven small ribs. The internodes are up to 15 centimeters long and the nodes are covered with glands and stick. The scale-like leaves are about 2 millimeters in size and have glands on both sides.
The inflorescence consists of terminal cymes , which are forked twice in the growth axis. The rays emanating from it are up to 7 millimeters long. They carry the almost sedentary and 3 millimeter wide and 5 millimeter long cyathia . The elliptical nectar glands are succulent. The usually bald fruit is about 3 millimeters in size and is almost sessile. It contains the elongated seed, which has two to three furrows in the longitudinal direction.
Distribution and systematics
Euphorbia cassythoides is common in the West Indies .
The species was first described in 1860 by Pierre Edmond Boissier . Synonyms for Euphorbia cassythoides are Arthrothamnus cassythoides (Boiss.) Millsp. (1909) and Tirucallia cassythoides (Boiss.) PVHeath (1996).
