Euphorbia decaryi is a species of the genus spurge ( Euphorbia ) in the family of Euphorbiaceae (Euphorbiaceae).

description

The succulent Euphorbia decaryi grows as a small shrub and reaches a height of up to 12 centimeters. The 8 to 15 millimeter thick shoots form runners. The stiff, very succulent and egg-shaped leaves are at the tip of the shoots and are 5 centimeters long and 1.5 centimeters wide. The lower leaves have a straight edge, the edge of the upper leaves is wavy. They are grayish green in color and have spots on the leaf base. The red petiole is about 5 millimeters thick. The stipules, standing in narrow, spiral rows, are about 4 millimeters long and are short-lived. The base of these stipules is thickened and conspicuously structured.

The inflorescence consists of simple cymene . They stand on stems up to 1.5 centimeters long. The nodding cyathophylls are pink-yellow in color and red at the edges. They reach about 6 millimeters in length and 4 millimeters in width. The cyathia are about 4 millimeters in diameter. The elliptical nectar glands are colored yellow. The ovary is sessile and nothing is known about the fruits and seeds.

Distribution and systematics

Euphorbia decaryi is endemic to Madagascar .

The species was first described in 1934 by André Guillaumin .

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Euphorbia decaryi var. Ampanihyense Cremers (1984); In contrast to the trunk species, the leaves are 30 millimeters long and 8 millimeters wide; the stipules are visible as small warts; the inflorescence stands on a stalk about 5 millimeters long
  • Euphorbia decaryi var. Decaryi
  • Euphorbia decaryi var. Robinsonii Cremers (1984); In contrast to the stem species, the plants are not that big and have a bulbous root; the leaves are 20 millimeters long and 8 millimeters wide; the petiole becomes 2 millimeters long; the stipules are in five rows and are thickened at the base to 2 millimeters wide and 3 millimeters long; the cyathophylls stand upright; it is suspected to be similar to Euphorbia capsaintemariensis
Euphorbia decaryi var. Spirosticha
  • Euphorbia decaryi var. Spirosticha Rauh & Buchloh (1987); In contrast to the stem species, the plants remain smaller; the lanceolate leaves are in spiral rows and are up to 1.5 centimeters long; the leaf margins are conspicuously wavy and the simple stipules are cartilaginous or divided into bristles; the inflorescences are simple, nodding cymes
