Euphorbia dregeana is a species of plant in the genus milkweed ( Euphorbia ) from the family of the milkweed family(Euphorbiaceae). Her botanical name was given to her in honor of the German botanist Johann Franz Drege (1794–1881). The species does not have a German name, but it can be translated as "Dreges Wolfsmilch".
Description and distribution
The species forms succulent , up to 2 m tall, mainly branching shrubs from the base . Its cylindrical, green branches are kept upright and up to 5 cm thick at the base, slimmer above, up to about 1.5 cm thick in the new shoot. The leaves are only 8 × 6 mm in size on slightly swollen and raised leaf bases. The leaves fall off during the dry season , leaving the plant bare. With this growth form, Euphorbia dregeana is a typical representative of the coral bushes .
The inflorescences appear terminally on the branches. They are dense, three-pronged sham umbels that branch up to three times forks. The cyathia, up to 8 mm in size, sit above the paired bracts up to 7 × 12 mm in size. These carry five elliptical nectar glands. The seated fruits are up to 9 × 6 mm in size and indistinctly six-lobed.
The type location of the species is Silverfontein , east of Springbok . The distribution area extends from Lüderitz ( Namibia ) in the north to Kamiskroon ( South Africa ) in the south.
Euphorbia dregeana is the host of the rare root parasite Hydnora triceps .
