description

Cyathia of Euphorbia sakarahaensis

The succulent Euphorbia sakarahaensis grows as a dwarf shrub and reaches heights of 50 cm, with the branches forming a plant diameter of 40 cm. Their much branched main stem axis has a diameter of up to 5 cm and changes into a thickened taproot. The branches are divided into long and short shoots , with the long shoots having a diameter of 5 to 7 mm and ending in the short shoots in the leaf axils . The thin thorns are slightly curved and stand individually. They grow up to an inch long and have a gray color at the top and a light brown color at the base. The leaves of the long shoots are lanceolate with a length of 2 to 2.5 cm and a width of about 2 mm and have a dark green top and a gray-green underside. The leaves of the short shoots are smaller.

The inflorescences, which are located in groups at the ends of the branches, are small yellow-green to dark brown cyathia . The inflorescence stem has a length of 1 cm. Their triangular cyathophylls are spreading, become 5 mm long and are 3 mm wide at the base, whereby size and color can vary.

distribution

Euphorbia sakarahaensis is endemic to southwest Madagascar . There you can find them in the Sakaraha Forest in the Mahaboboka Plain. It grows as a xerophyte in dry forests under trees.

This little known species is only known from the Sakaraha area, but its exact total distribution area is still unknown. This area is anthropogenic influenced by fire and agriculture. This species is collected at the locations for the ornamental plant trade. The area is degraded for charcoal production.

Euphorbia sakarahaensis is classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species . Some locations are in protected areas. Euphorbia sakarahaensis is listed in the Washington Convention on the Protection of Species (CITES) Appendix (Appendix) II: The trade is controlled worldwide.
