Euphrosyne Parepa-Rosa (born May 7, 1836 in Edinburgh , † January 21, 1874 in London ) was an English opera singer (soprano).

Life

Parepa was the daughter of the soprano Elizabeth Seguin and the Wallachian prince Demetrius Parepa. At the age of 18 she made her debut at the Royal Opera House of Malta as Amina in Vincenzo Bellini's opera La sonnambula . Between 1853 and 1857 she made guest appearances in Naples, Genoa, Rome, Florence, Madrid and Lisbon. In 1857 she was engaged at the Royal Italian Opera in London, where she made her debut as Elvira in Bellini's I puritani . Between 1859 and 1865 she appeared regularly at Covent Garden Opera and Her Majesty's Theater in London. She was also a soloist at the London Handel Festival between 1862 and 1865.

Between 1863 and 1865 Parepa toured the USA with Max Maretzek's Opera Company. In 1866 she went on a concert tour through the USA with the cornetist Jules Levy and the violinist and conductor Carl Rosa . In the following year she married Rosa and with him founded the Parepa-Rose Grand English Opera Company , which she ran with him as impresario. The company toured numerous major US cities between 1869 and 1872.

In 1872 Parepa-Rosa performed at the Niederrheinischer Musikfest in Düsseldorf and sang Donna Elvira in Mozart's Don Giovanni at the Covent Garden Opera . In the same year she said goodbye to the stage due to health problems, but in 1874 she sang Elsa in Richard Wagner's Lohengrin at the Drury Lane Theater . After her death, Carl Rosa donated the Parepa-Rosa Scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London to support talented singers who were poor.
