European ecumenical encounter

European Ecumenical Meetings are joint meetings of the Conference of European Churches (CEC) and the Council of European Bishops' Conferences (CCEE) . On the part of CEC, the members of the central committee (up to 1992: Presidium and Advisory Committee), on the part of the CCEE, delegates of the bishops' conferences, with additional guests taking part on both sides.

A series of five European Ecumenical Meetings took place between 1978 and 1991. Encounters of a similar character took place again in 1995 and 2001, but without being counted by the organizers as the sixth and seventh European Ecumenical Encounters.

Chantilly 1978

The first European Ecumenical Meeting took place from April 10th to 13th, 1978 in Chantilly, France. The theme was' Be one, 'that the world may believe' ".

Lögum Monastery 1981

In the Danish Løgumkloster the second European Ecumenical Meeting was held from November 16-20 , 1981 under the theme “Calling to a Hope”.

Riva del Garda 1984

Under the topic Confessing the Faith Together - Source of Hope, the third European Ecumenical Meeting dealt with the ecumenical understanding of the Nicano-Constantinopolitan Creed . The meeting took place from October 3rd to 8th in Riva del Garda , near Trento , Italy.

Erfurt 1988

From September 28th to October 2nd, 1988 the fourth European Ecumenical Meeting took place in the former German Democratic Republic , in Erfurt . The theme was "Let your kingdom come". This meeting was the last before the first European Ecumenical Assembly in 1989 in Basel.

Santiago de Compostela 1991

The fifth European Ecumenical Meeting took place in the Spanish pilgrimage town of Santiago de Compostela from November 13th to 17th, 1991. She dealt with the topic “On Your Word - Mission and Evangelization in Europe Today”.

Assisi 1995

In 1995 the Central Committee of the Conference of European Churches and the Council of European Bishops' Conferences held their annual meeting simultaneously in Assisi . At times they met together; On the occasion of this meeting the official invitation to the Second European Ecumenical Assembly for 1997 in Graz was issued .

Strasbourg 2001

Since Easter fell on the same date in the Eastern and Western Churches in 2001 , KEK and CCEE invited to a European Ecumenical Meeting in the week after Easter. For the first time, in addition to the one hundred church leaders from the governing bodies of KEK and CCEE, the same number of young people took part; this should express the future perspective of ecumenism in Europe at the beginning of the third millennium. On the occasion of this meeting, the Presidents of KEK and CCEE signed the Charter oecumenica .
