Wanda Zacharias

Wanda Zacharias , née Huber (born July 9, 1931 in Augsburg ; † August 26, 2008 in Starnberg ) was a German painter and illustrator who made a name for herself primarily in the field of children's book illustration.

life and work

Wanda Zacharias studied theater studies from 1950 onwards at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, stage design and illustration. She was a student of Emil Preetorius and Richard Seewald .

In addition to her graphic work, Wanda Zacharias also worked as a photographer, especially for the circus, among others. a. Circus Krone and the Mongolian State Circus. There she portrayed many famous artists, among them Oleg Popov . She also worked as a prop and costume designer .

Wanda Zacharias was married to the artist and university professor Thomas Zacharias since 1958 . Most recently she lived in retirement in Leutstetten on Lake Starnberg . Their daughter Claudia emerged from the marriage.

Awards

The book "Kasperls Reise über das Meer" (text: Franz Graf von Pocci ), illustrated by Wanda Zacharias, was selected as one of the most beautiful German books in 1960 by the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels. In 1962 the artist was again in the shortlist of the most beautiful German books, this time with “Mikosch the carousel horse” (text: Thomas Zacharias ).
