Count Franz Ludwig Evarist Alexander von Pocci ([ pɔtʃi ]) (* March 7, 1807 in Munich ; † May 7, 1876 ​​there ) was a German draftsman, etcher, writer, musician and composer. Because of his works for the puppet and puppet theater, he was also known as the "Punch and Judy".

Life

Franz von Pocci was the son of coming from Italy officer Count Fabrizio Evaristo of Pocci (1766-1844), who Elector Karl Theodor was entered into Bavarian services and there at the birth of Franz von Pocci to Lieutenant General and High Steward of Caroline Queen had brought . His mother was the Dresden baroness Xaveria von Posch. He studied law and became a member of the Corps Isaria in 1826 . At the age of 23 he became master of ceremonies for Ludwig I of Bavaria. In 1847 he was appointed court music director and Ludwig II appointed him royal Bavarian chief chamberlain in 1864.

Pocci supported the puppet theater founder Josef Leonhard Schmid in the difficult approval process for the Munich Marionette Theater , for which Pocci created numerous puppet shows from 1858 using materials from old German folk books, fairy tales, operas and plays. On his advice, Schmid applied for the theater for children and adults.

The "Punch Count" wrote more than 40 puppet pieces for the puppet theater with themes from fairy tales - and legends as well as contributions to the Munich broadsheet . He was very creative and productive and left innumerable caricatures and around 600 pieces of music for posterity, for example the song If I Were a Little Bird .

His Kasperl stories entwine around the Kasperl Larifari , who is not a nice hero, but a rather ambivalent character. Larifari also has dark sides and is to be understood as an adult who has never grown up. Larifari has no parents, but is put into a golden egg by a magician and given to a hen to hatch. He never has the chance to grow up in an intact family and becomes a blender, trickster and narcissist .

One of his most important works is the Funny Comedy Booklet, which contains, among other things, the Punch and Judy stories Punch under the Wild and Punch and Judy in Turkey .

Nevertheless, Pocci is not the inventor of the puppet theater. For example, the Mr. Punch already existed in England or the Hanswurst in German-speaking countries . The figure of Larifari was created in the Salzburger Land as a crude pleasure that Pocci wanted to cultivate in his works.

Memberships and honors

From 1837 to 1875 he was a member of the casual society in Munich , for which he made many drawings and etchings.

Münsing: family grave

In Munich the Poccistraße and the adjacent underground station are named after him, in Landshut the Graf-Pocci-Weg and in Ingolstadt the Poccistraße .

On March 11, 2006, a memorial was erected in his honor in Münsing : For more than the last three decades of his life, Pocci's summer residence had been Ammerland Castle, which belongs to Münsing .

In addition, in 2007 in Munich, in front of the puppet theater, on the occasion of his 200th birthday, another monument was erected next to the entrance on Blumenstrasse. It was created by the artist Ernst Grünwald . Its shape is reminiscent of a small transportable stage. In front of a large portrait of Pocci stands the Münchner Kindl, who introduces the bowing Punch and Judy Larifari.

estate

The estate is kept in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich and consists of large folders, three volumes and three bundles. This includes his correspondence and drawings and graphics, as well as seals. The archive of the men's club Casual Society and a collection of its publications as well as an extensive repertory are also available. Most of the estate has been digitized and included in the directory of nationally valuable archives .

On the occasion of the artist's 200th birthday, the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek presented an exhibition by the writer, draftsman and composer Pocci from July 27th to October 14th, 2007: life documents, letters, original drawings and prints from his estate.
