Kasperl in China is a play written by Franz von Pocci from 1855 .

action

After Kasperl, who had had enough of his homeland, had himself stuck in a barrel and thrown overboard on the way to America, he arrived in China and there was sold to the Mandarin by slave tradersQuingquing has been sold, for example, whose braid he has to wank. Since Kasperl doesn't speak a word of Chinese and the minister doesn't speak German, at some point he slaps him in the face out of impatience, from which Quinquing falls dead. Kasperl then disguises himself as his master and seeks out the Chinese emperor. However, he is so outraged by "Quinquing" 's behavior and his irreverent desire for beer that he leaves him alone. Since he does not want to have been minister without some advantage, Kasperl orders a slave to bring him a barrel of wine. To Kasperl's surprise, however, the spirit of his slain Mr. Quingquing rises out of this. When the latter speaks Chinese again with him, Kasperl beats him until he disappears into the barrel again. Then Kasperl decides to be content with tea and then return home.

Chinese stereotypes and linguistic parody

In the play Pocci describes some Chinese stereotypes : According to Kasperl, they only drink tea, the emperor mentions the indulgence of opium, which he hated. In addition, the Chinese do not speak real Chinese, but rather a fantasy language that, for Pocci when parodies of foreign languages is common, contain some German words that only sound foreign. For example, the name of the imperial valet is Kakao, or Quingquing gives the order to ponytail with the words: "Wixlipixlichaochao".
