Heinrich August Ottokar Reichard (born March 7, 1751 in Gotha ; † October 17, 1828 there ) was a German librarian and writer.

Life

He was the only child from the marriage of the Gotha senior consistorial and senior police secretary Friedrich August Reichard and his wife Marie Charlotte nee Bube. When Heinrich August Ottokar was four years old, his birth father died, and through his mother's second marriage, the secret government councilor Rudloff became his stepfather, who promoted and financed his education. From 1767, Reichard visited the universities in Göttingen, Leipzig and Jena one after the other to study law. In Leipzig he joined the Amicist Order and founded a branch association at the University of Jena .

In 1771 Reichard returned to Gotha, where he earned his living by publishing his first literary attempts. The factor of the Dieterich bookstore in Gotha took over the publishing of his works, which from 1772 initially appeared anonymously. These included "Cupid in front of the courts, a nouvelle from the annals of the gods", "Nuns songs with melodies", "The story of my trip to Pirmont", "Whims to my doctor when he recommended the diet to me", "Smaller poetry von mir ”,“ The hill at Kindleben ”,“ Whims and ideas ”,“ Pot-Pourri ”and two translations from French.

In the following time Reichard tried to get in touch with foreign writers, for example in the Harz with LA Unzer in Wernigerode and von Göckingk in the town of Ellrich. At times he also worked as a librarian.

Reichard gained national fame from 1775 through the publication of the "Theater Calendar", which was important for the history of the Schaubühne in German-speaking countries and which appeared regularly until 1800. At the same time, from 1777 to 1784, 22 issues of the “Theater-Journal für Deutschland” appeared. His handbook for travelers from all classes , Leipzig, Weygand, 1784 , was also widely used .
