The European Academy Berlin is an institution of political education recognized by the Federal Agency for Civic Education in Germany. It organizes seminars, conferences, symposiums and other events on European topics. The European Academy Berlin is a member of the working group of German educational institutions , the European Network for Education and Training and the European Movement Germany as well as EurActiv network partner . Part of the European Academy Berlin is the European Academy for Urban Environment , which deals with urban ecological issues.

history

Your history of the European Academy Berlin is closely linked to the history of Berlin . The academy was founded in 1963 in response to the construction of the wall in order to create internationality for West Berlin and to support the European unification process. From the beginning, the focus of the academy's work was therefore on international networking. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the European Academy Berlin was able to build on its many contacts in Central and Eastern Europe. She accompanied the entire enlargement process of the European Union in 1995, 2004 and 2007 intensively with events. The academy describes itself as non-partisan and non-profit. It is co-financed by the “Europe for Citizens” program of the European Union.

From 1993 to 2017, the EAB was headed by the political scientist Eckart Stratenschulte , who was also an executive board member.

Even today, immigration policy and the various political approaches of the European Union are one of the focal points of the academy's activity, although it also deals with institutional issues and transatlantic relations. Every year the European Academy Berlin organizes around 150 events on its own responsibility. Every year around 4500 participants from 40 countries take part.

The European Academy designs its program in the framework of five business areas: international encounters, capacity building, European politics in practice, Europe in Berlin and Europe in schools.

Library

The library of the European Academy is a special academic library with the main topics European integration , European communities / Union and Europe in the classroom . It is also the European Documentation Center .

Conference building

The conference building of the European Academy Berlin, a villa from 1928 with an attached conference hotel, is also used by other organizers for their work.
