The common lobster ( Palinurus elephas ), also called European lobster , is a species of the lobster family . It is offered as a seafood in the fish markets in the Mediterranean area.

features

The maximum body length of this lobster species is 50 centimeters. The second pair of antennas is more than body length. The pairs of striding legs I to III are without scissors. The basic color is red-brown to purple-brown. The antennae are banded reddish brown and yellow. Young animals have a yellow longitudinal ligament on the upper side of the body and yellow antennae.

distribution

It is found in the eastern Atlantic from southwest Norway to Morocco and is also found in the Mediterranean . In the Mediterranean, however, it is absent in the southeastern part. It can also be found on the coasts of the Azores , Madeira and the Canaries .

habitat

The common lobster lives on rock bottoms at a depth of 5 to 160 meters. It usually occurs between 10 and 30 meters in cold water and deeper in warm water.
