As Europe Day two days in the year are called, where a holiday for Europe is committed: the May 5 each year commemorates the founding of the Council of Europe , on 9 May each year commemorates the Schuman Declaration . In German-speaking countries, May 8 is sometimes suggested or mentioned as a public holiday for Europe.

May 5th - Europe Day of the Council of Europe

This Europe Day, which has been celebrated since 1964, commemorates the founding of the Council of Europe with the signing of its statutes on May 5, 1949 in London.

May 8th - end of World War II in Europe

With the surrender of the German Wehrmacht on May 8, 1945, the Second World War ended in Europe ( Liberation Day ). However, this day is not celebrated on the same day in all countries. In the more recent past, for example, the move by the Austrian MEP Claudia Gamon gave rise to the discussion. Regardless of this, commentators attest a certain continuity of content to the memorial days.

May 9th - Europe Day of the European Union

Building on an idea by Jean Monnet , French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman proposed in his Paris speech on May 9, 1950 , to create a coal and steel production community. This became known as the Schuman Declaration and resulted in the establishment of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), also known as the coal and steel union , which was to form the cornerstone of today's European Union .

At the 1985 Milan Summit of Heads of State and Government , at the suggestion of the Adonnino Committee , it was decided to commemorate this event on May 9th each year on European Union Day, on which numerous events and festivities have been taking place since 1986. At the same time, Europe Day is off-duty for many employees of the EU institutions, although the European Parliament meets if 9 May falls on a group, committee or plenary day.

In Article I-8 of the EU Constitutional Treaty, Europe Day was explicitly listed along with other symbols of the European Union . However, after the failure of the Constitutional Treaty , this was not included in the Lisbon Treaty .

In Kosovo , Europe Day on May 9th ( Albanian : Dita e Evropës ) is a public holiday. The same has been true in Luxembourg since 2019 .
