The European Fair Trade Association ( EFTA , German  European Association of Fair Trade ) is a non-governmental organization made up of ten fair trade importers from nine European countries.

History and activities

EFTA was founded in 1987 as a loose association of some large fair trade importers. In 1990 an association was established under Dutch law. Ten years later, it plays a key role in harmonizing and coordinating fair trade activities . EFTA co-founded FINE - a network of international fair trade organizations.

In 1995, the organization established the Fair Trade Advocacy Office (FTAO), a lobbying office for fair trade. In 2011 it was replaced by a joint lobby office with the other international umbrella organizations Fairtrade Labeling Organizations International (FLO) and World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO).

The organization has set up a joint monitoring system. Organizations with which EFTA members cooperate but which are not listed in the FLO register are subjected to an evaluation by EFTA members based on a division of labor. Members should receive an early warning in the event of non-compliance with standards.

Unlike FLO and WFTO, EFTA has not developed its own certification system for products or organizations; producers cannot become members of EFTA.

Members

The member organizations are:

Members can also be members or licensees of other fair trade associations, for example Gepa is also a member of the WFTO and licensee of the FLO's fair trade seal .

Sales figures

In total, the members import fair trade products from 370 economically disadvantaged producer groups in Africa , Asia and Latin America (as of 2013).

Fiscal year net retail sales were:

  • 2011: 300 million euros
  • 2006: 229 million euros
  • 2001: 148 million euros
  • 1996: 106 million euros

By far the largest share was accounted for by groceries (including coffee), followed by handicrafts. Other product groups played a minor role.
