European Sources Online

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

European Sources Online ( ESO ) is a freely accessible database and information service from Cardiff University . It is intended to support the public in understanding Europe in all its contexts and to provide a comprehensive and curated collection of sources and information.

The online ESO database is designed to provide an expert selection of information on a variety of relevant topics from a variety of information sources - primary and official sources, commentary and analysis, summaries and media reports, journal articles, blog posts, monographs and academic textbooks, with links to the full Content of the sources. The ESO team will provide an overview of the topic, which includes the context or an introductory explanation that is covered in the sources listed. The records are updated with new developments, sources and information.

ESO also offers its own information manuals on a specific European topic or problem, policy or institution. They also contain references for further information. The ESO team also collects suggestions from users about potential new guides.

The database records are divided into three different categories:

  • Bibliographic records - containing only one source, with in-depth analysis such as textbooks, monographs, detailed reports and other important publications.
  • Mixed records - which contain both a main source and related sources and which complement the main source information. They will be updated with new developments, sources and information.
  • Dynamic records - with a number of relevant sources that together provide a comprehensive insight into all relevant topics for which there is no leading source.

The database and information service are hosted and managed by Cardiff EDC, an information service of Cardiff University's university library.

A number of librarians and information specialists across Europe are also contributing to the development of the database - teams of experts at the British Library , the University of Zagreb (Croatia), the Sapienza University in Rome (Italy), the Francisco de Vitoria University (Spain) and the Ca 'Foscari University in Venice (Italy), the Estonian National Library , the University of Milan (Italy) and the University of Tartu (Estonia).

ESO services have been free of charge since 2013.
