The helmet vanga ( Euryceros prevostii ) is a passerine bird in the family of the Vangawurger (Vangidae).
features
The helmet vanga is an impressive 28–31 cm large, 84–114 g heavy vanga with a powerful blue beak (approx. 50 mm long, 30 mm thick) with a black tip, young birds have a dark gray beak with a light tip. It has a rather long and broad tail. The male is predominantly black with a brown back and a brown upper side of the tail, the female more brownish.
behavior
One often sees the helmet vanga in mixed swarms "mixed flocks" together with other vangas. It feeds on insects and small vertebrates on leaves and on the ground.
Helmet Vangas are monogamous and breed between October and January. Both sexes are involved in nest building, the clutch comprises 2 - 3 reddish-white eggs.
distribution and habitat
These endemic species belongs to the monotypic genus Eryceros and lives in Madagascar , where it is limited to the rainforest below 1200 m in the northeast in the National Park Marojejy , Makira Natural Park , Masoala National Park and National Park Mantadia Andasibe .
Hazardous situation
The stock is considered to be endangered ( Vulnerable ).
