Euthalia phemius is occurring in Asia Butterfly ( butterfly ) from the family of Nymphalidae (Nymphalidae).
features
butterfly
The wingspan of the moth is 60 to 85 millimeters. The species is characterized by a clear sexual dimorphism . Common to both sexes is the brownish base color of the upper sides of the wings. In the males, a radial whitish line drawing stands out in the postdiscal region of the forewings and a light blue region above the inner edge of the hind wings, which is lined with white. In English usage, the species is therefore referred to as White-edged Blue Baron (Weißrändriger Blauer Baron). The anal angle is acute. The females are distinguished by a white band that runs from the middle of the front edge of the forewings to the inner corner , as well as the absence of the blue region on the hind wings. The undersides of the wings of both sexes are colored ocher to reddish brown and depict the white drawing elements of the forewings.
Caterpillar
Adult caterpillars are colored green. Fir-branch-like, prickly protrusions emerge from each body segment. The back line is yellow.
Similar species
The similarly colored butterflies of Euthalia telchinia , Euthalia monina and Tanaecia julii lack the white border on the inner edge of the hind wings in the males. In the females, the white markings on the forewing upper side are only weakly developed or absent. The males of Tanaecia julii also differ significantly in their round anal angle.
distribution and habitat
The distribution area of the species extends from southeast India via Bangladesh , Burma , Thailand and Malaysia to southeast China . In Hong Kong it is represented by the subspecies Euthalia phemius seitzi , in Borneo by Euthalia phemius euphemia .
Euthalia phemius primarily inhabits moist deciduous forests.
Way of life
The moths fly all year round, mainly in June and July. They like to suck on damp places in the earth in order to absorb fluids and minerals. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of the lychee tree ( Litchi chinensis ) or mango ( Mangifera indica ).
