Henry Doubleday (born July 1, 1808 in Epping (Essex) , † June 29, 1875 ibid) was an English entomologist , ornithologist and lepidopterologist .
Henry Doubleday was the eldest son of the Quaker and merchant Benjamin Doubleday and his wife Mary from Epping , Essex . He and his brother Edward Doubleday have been interested in natural history since childhood and, among other things, collected insects in the Epping Forest. He lived at the same time as his cousin of the same name, the scientist and plant breeder Henry Doubleday (1810-1902) .
Henry Doubleday was the author of the first catalog on British butterflies and moths, Synonymic List of the British Lepidoptera (1847–50). He is the namesake of various species of moths. His collection is still in the Natural History Museum . One of the butterflies he describes is the ash gray ground owl .
He corresponded with Charles Darwin .
