Eva-Britt Siv Margareta Svensson (born December 5, 1946 in Värnamo , Småland ) is a Swedish politician from the left-wing Vänsterpartiet and was a member of the European Parliament between 2004 and 2011 .

Life

Svensson was 1992 chairman of the Eurosceptic organization Nej till EU ( "No to EU"), which, in 1995, Sweden joined the European Union was trying to prevent. She remained at the top of the club until 2001, after which she became deputy chairwoman. From 1995 she held various offices in the Vänsterpartiet, where she became a member of the party executive in 2000. In the same year she also became a member of the board of the Swedish Tenants' Association.

In the European elections in 2004 she was elected to the European Parliament for the first time , where she was deputy chairman of the group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left (GUE / NGL) until 2009 . She won another mandate in the 2009 European elections and was then elected chairman of the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality . In September 2011, Svensson resigned from her MP, which was taken over by Mikael Gustafsson .
