Evangelist Luke, fol. 21 BC

The London Gospel Book is an illuminated manuscript from the 8th century from Ireland with additions from the 10th century from England . It is only partially preserved and still contains 66 sheets. The manuscript is now in the British Library in London under the call number Add MS 40618 .

The manuscript is written in insular minuscule , with a short Anglo-Saxon addition at the end. A pictorial representation of the Evangelist Luke with strong resemblance to representations in the Irish Book of Mulling from the 8th century has been preserved. The other early evangelist portraits are missing. Winchester- style illustrations of Luke and John have survived from the 10th century . Some initials have been given zoomorphic decorations.
