John the Evangelist.

The so-called Gospel Book from Saint Médard in Soissons is a Carolingian illuminated manuscript that was written before 827. That year, Louis the Pious and his wife Judith donated the Codex to the Church of Saint-Médard in Soissons . The manuscript probably comes from the so-called “court school of Charlemagne” and was created in the last years of Charlemagne's life. It is considered the outstanding work of this painting school.

The gospel book comprises 239 parchment sheets , its format is 362 x 267 mm. The manuscript is illuminated with six full-page miniatures and 12 canon tables. The illustrations show a Maiestas Domini , four evangelist images , the fountain of life and the adoration of the Lamb . The text of the magnificent manuscript is written almost entirely in golden uncials . The manuscript was brought to Paris in 1790 and has been in the Bibliothèque nationale (Ms. Lat. 8850) since the 19th century .
