Wani Gospels

Gospels Wani ( Georgian ოთხთავი ვანის or ვანის სახარება, vɑnɪs ɔtʰχtʰɑvɪ or vɑnɪs sɑχɑrɛbɑ ) is a Georgian manuscript liturgical book from the 12th to the 13th century with the Gospels of the New Testament . The text is written in Georgian with the Georgian script Nuschuri in two columns. The titles and initials are written in Assomtavruli . The writing material is parchment . The size of one side is 29 × 21 cm; the columns are 19 × 5.2 cm. The book contains 274 sheets.

The gospel book is richly decorated with miniatures and ornamental decorations. Gold leaf , gold, and red inks are used liberally.

The Wani Gospel was written in the Georgian Romana Monastery in Constantinople by the Georgian calligrapher Ioane. The book was commissioned by the Georgian Queen Tamar and was her property thereafter. The editing of the text belongs to Giorgi Mtazmideli .

In the 14th and 15th centuries, the manuscript in the monastery in Schorata was Meskhetia , in the 18th century in Wani and in the 19th century Gelati Monastery kept. Today it is kept in the Georgian National Manuscript Center under the shelf number A-1335.
