Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada ( English Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada ELCIC , French Eglise Evangelique Lutherienne au Canada ) is the largest Lutheran church in Canada . ELCIC has around 148,863 baptized church members in 624 parishes. It represents a more liberal theology as the Lutheran Church - Canada (English Lutheran Church -. Canada (LCC)), are among the 67,154 baptized church members in 312 congregations (2010).

Church history

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada was formed in 1986 through the merger of two predecessor churches , the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Canada , which in turn was founded in 1966 by Canadian congregations of the American Lutheran Church , and three synodal districts of the Lutheran Church in America , which were known as Canada Section were designated. 1988, the US sister churches for merged Evangelical Lutheran Church in America ( Evangelical Lutheran Church in America , ELCA).

Ecumenical Relations

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada is part of the Lutheran World Federation , the Canadian Council of Churches and the World Council of Churches . Full church fellowship exists according to the Waterloo Declaration of 2001 to the Anglican Church of Canada .

Teaching

The ELCIC teaches the contents of the Bible and the Christian faith based on the three creeds: the Nicene Creed , the Apostolic Creed and the Athanasian Creed . She appeals to Martin Luther .

The ordination of women and the ordination of homosexual pastors is permitted in the ELCIC . The blessing of same-sex couples was in the Eastern Synod, one of the five Synodalbezirke, approved in 2006; this decision was temporarily overridden by the national church council under Bishop Raymond Schultz , because the synod had exceeded its decision-making authority. At the same time, a draft was submitted for the church assembly in 2007, which delegated the right to decide on the blessing of same-sex couples to the congregations. Although the Eastern Synod insists on the legality of its resolution, it has suspended its execution pending a decision by the church assembly. Church organization and leadership

The ELCIC is divided into five synodal districts, each headed by a bishop. The individual synodal districts send delegates to the National Convention (church assembly), which elects the church council and the church chairman, known as the national bishop .
