The Romanesque double apse

The Evangelical Church is a parish church in Oberbieber , a district of Neuwied ( Neuwied district ) in Rhineland-Palatinate .

history

In 1021, Emperor Heinrich II donated an estate to Dietkirchen Abbey , on which a chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas was built by the Abbey. The core of today's Protestant parish church emerges from it.

In 1315 the estate was exchanged for the Rommersdorf monastery and from there to the Count of Wied after the Reformation was introduced in 1575. From 1796 Oberbieber belonged to the parish of Niederbieber until the chapel became an independent parish church in 1907. The two-storey Romanesque apse has been preserved from the Nikolauskapelle built around 1200. In the first half of the 13th century, two flank towers were added to the apse. After severe damage by looting troops in 1675, the north tower had to be removed. A new construction of the nave was started in 1751, but was not completed until 1790 due to limited funds.

From today's building findings it is not clear whether the double apse is the remains of a Romanesque choir tower or whether there was an intention to erect such a tower. In any case, the construction of the apse at least indicates that a choir tower was originally planned before the flank towers were built.
