Evangelical Church in Bad Wimpfen-Hohenstadt

The Evangelical Church in Hohenstadt, which belongs to Bad Wimpfen in the district of Heilbronn in northern Baden-Württemberg, dates back to the 15th century, was a branch church of the Bad Wimpfen town church until 1860 and has been its own parish church since then .

history

The church was built around 1480 on the foundations of an old chapel in the middle of the Hohenstadt cemetery. Like the older chapel, the church was consecrated to St. Walpurgis. In the course of time the nave of the church has been rebuilt many times, as evidenced by several dating inscriptions at the entrance and on the windows of the church. Only the choir area with star and cross vaults has retained the original Gothic language of form. Due to the similarity of the choir structure and its keystones with those of the town church Bad Wimpfen and the Cornelienkirche , it is assumed that the same builder can be considered for their execution.

The church in Hohenstadt was a branch of the Wimpfen city church until 1860 and was then raised to an independent parish church. In 1878 the church tower, which was previously designed as an open half-timbered building, was clad with slate shingles.

The church was last extensively renovated in 1992, with a Gothic font and an old carved pulpit plinth being removed. The historical art treasures of the church include two small round stained glass windows with the coats of arms of two Wimpfen mayors from the 16th century. These panes of glass probably come from Wimpfen patrician houses or from the old Wimpfen town hall. The modern choir window by the glass artist Heinz Hindorf shows the parable of the Last Judgment.

In the church there is an old organ with nine registers from around 1850. The organ was placed in the choir until 1896 and was then moved to the gallery . The instrument is a listed building and was restored in 1999.
