The Evangelical Church of Volberg is located on the west bank of the Sülz river in Rösrath - Hoffnungsthal .

Volberg

Volberg is the oldest part of Rösrath. As early as 893 the settlement was mentioned as Vogelberhc in the Prümer Urbar , a list of properties of the Benedictine monastery of Prüm in the Eifel.

Due to the hopeful industrial development at the beginning of the 19th century, Volberg was renamed into Hoffnungsthal . Nowadays the name Volberg can only be found as a street name and as a location around the Protestant church on the western Sülzufer.

The district of Altvolberg in the Forsbach district suggests that the old Volberg was originally located on the Forsbacher Heights and was later relocated to the Sülztal. In particular, the street name Wiedenhof in Forsbach indicates an old rectory. It is therefore not excluded that the place name Vogelberhc in the Prümer Urbar does not refer to today's Volberg in the Sülztal, but to Altvolberg in the Forsbach district.

Building history

The beginnings of the Romanesque predecessor church are unknown. Only the basement of the tower and the apse have survived from this Romanesque period . This is a choir tower . Evidently from 1567 the evangelical clergyman Wilhelm von Katterbach preaches in Volberg. At the latest from this point in time it is a Lutheran parish. In 1748, Baroness Lucia Anna von Loë from the House of Stade financed the renovation of the church tower. This is what it says in a document that was found in the golden tower ball during restoration work in 1977. From 1788 the church was rebuilt. It was inaugurated on February 2, 1790.

With the exception of restoration work, e.g. B. 1928 and 1954, the walls originate mainly from the 18th century. The interior was gradually added: painting (1809), organ (1896), tower clock (1899), heating (1904), concrete floor (1928).

In addition to the entrance on the south side, which is mostly used nowadays, there is the “Forsbacher Tür” on the north side. Until 1956 this was the entrance for the church visitors from Forsbach, who went to church via the "Kirchweg" to Hopesthal. The Kirchweg is a street name in Forsbach that still exists today. In 1956 the Protestant Christ Church was consecrated in Forsbach .

Between October 23, 1974 and August 29, 1976, the Volberg Church was closed due to the risk of collapse. The roof pushed the side walls apart. Cracks appeared in the masonry. Among other things, a concrete ring was inserted between the roof structure and the masonry for stabilization.

Organs

The Volberg church has two organs. Both sound bodies, both the small older organ above the pulpit altar and the larger younger organ on the west gallery, can be operated from a common desk. More than 2000 pipes are available for organ concerts.
