history

Discontinued church on the upper market

The city of Neunkirchen (Saar) got its name from the "New Church", which was probably built by farmers' sons from Wiebelskirchen in the 13th century. The exact location can no longer be determined today, but it was probably on the upper market. Initially Catholic, she became Protestant in the course of the Reformation in 1574. The church was built in the Romanesque style in 1610/1611 and modernized again from 1725 to 1727. In the middle of the 19th century, however, the church had become too small for the now 3869 (as of 1859) Protestant Christians. A dispute arose among the supporters about the location of the new church, which some wanted to see at the old location on the upper market. Others favored the lower town. The industrialist Carl Ferdinand von Stumm-Halberg tried to settle the dispute and had two churches built. One became the Christ Church .

A new church in neo-Gothic style was built on the upper market . It was consecrated on December 16, 1869 and initially baptized Friedenskirche. In popular parlance, however, it initially remained simply the "Upper Church". The presbytery decided on April 17, 1931 to rename it to the Pauluskirche in memory of Paulus von Tarsus . The church was in the Second World War severely damaged in an air raid on 30 November 1944, and met again on March 15, 1945th The nave collapsed, only the tower remained standing. In the course of the reconstruction, the existing walls were removed. The tower remained standing until 1953 when it was demolished.

Church on Schloßstraße

Due to traffic planning, reconstruction was no longer possible at the old location. The site of the former Jägermeisterhaus on Schloßstraße was chosen as the new location. The design was made by the architect Rudolf Krüger and the construction work extended from 1953 to 1955. On November 6, 1955 the church was consecrated.

In the last few years the church was used less and less until it was bought by Bishop Anba Michael , Bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Church in southern Germany. Since then, Holy Mass has been celebrated every second Sunday. Traditionally, there is a common feeding after the service.
