Maria Schalcken (* around 1645 - 1649 in Made , Netherlands ; † before 1700 in Dordrecht ) was a Dutch painter from the era of the Golden Age .

Life

Maria Schalcken was the fourth of the eight surviving children of pastor Cornelis Schalcken and his wife Aletta, née Lydius, a pastor's daughter from Dordrecht . Her next older brother, born in 1643, was the later painter Godefridus Schalcken , her next younger brother was born in 1650. Her father had been pastor of Made and Drimmelen since 1642 .

Maria probably received training in drawing and painting from her brother Godefridus. In 1682 she married Severijn van Bracht, a merchant from Dordrecht. In Geschiedenis der Vaderlandsche Schilderkunst (History of the Fatherland [Dutch] Painting) from 1816 an engraving is shown after a drawn self-portrait, which shows her as an elderly woman with a palette and a brush, which suggests that she was still an artist after her marriage was.

In 1683 the daughter Anna was born, who presumably died early, two years later the son Jan. She must have died before July 1700 because her husband got engaged again in that month.

Of the few paintings left behind, the self-portrait in front of the easel (around 1680) until a restoration in 1998 was incorrectly attributed to her brother. The studio scene shows her sitting in front of an easel painting a landscape, which suggests that she was also active in landscape painting  . However, a small number of her genre paintings in particular have survived:

  • Young woman at the dressing table (London, privately owned)
  • A boy offering grapes to a woman (New York, The Leiden Collection)
  • Portrait of a young girl (mentioned in old auction catalogs)
  • A woman sitting in front of her dressing table and eating jam (mentioned in old auction catalogs)
  • A drunk woman and a boy in a room (mentioned in old auction catalogs)

According to Geschiedenis der vaderlandsche schilderkunst , paintings by Maria Schalcken have been included in prestigious art collections.
