Evangelical cemetery in Düren
The evangelical cemetery on Kölnstrasse in Düren is a denominational burial place in Düren , North Rhine-Westphalia , on Kölnstrasse , which is open to members of all religions for burials.
In 1825 the industrialists Rudolph and Lucia Schoeller from Düren donated the area in Kölnstrasse to the Reformed community in Düren. After several extensions, the cemetery was built in its current size in 1868. Until 1884, spouses were not buried in common graves, as the founders had determined that they should be buried “in sequence, regardless of class or family affiliation and without any monuments”.
In the Wilhelmine era, imposing tombs of the Düren factory owner families Hoesch, Schoeller, Schleicher, Schüll, Deutgen and Heyder were created. Well-known sculptors such as Joseph Uphues , Johann Joseph Imhoff (the younger) , Alexander Iven , Edmund Renard and August Wittig designed the mostly elaborate monuments.
The cemetery, which is still buried today, has been entered in the list of monuments of the city of Düren under no. 1/55 since 1989.
The former dance hall next to the cemetery has been demolished. A cemetery chapel (mourning hall) with a columbarium was built there and is due to open in spring 2016. Where the mourning hall is now being built , the sexton's house still stood after the Second World War . The chapel in the cemetery was destroyed in the war. The sexton property was sold in the 1950s. First a furniture store was built there, and later a discotheque. The property was repurchased from a foreclosure auction .
The cemetery is owned by the Evangelical Church in Düren .
