Ewa Laurance

Ewa Laurance (born Ewa Svensson ; meanwhile also Ewa Mataya or Ewa Mataya Laurance ; born February 26, 1964 in Gävle ) is a Swedish pool player . She is also the author of three books on billiards.

Life

Laurance started playing billiards in her hometown of Gävle when she was 14 . A year later she won the national championship in 9-ball . Two years later, at the age of 17, she won the title in 14 and 1 endless at the 1981 European pool championship in Bern . A short time later she moved to New York City in the United States, where she married pool player Jimmy Mataya in 1982 . In reference to her Swedish origins, she is also nicknamed the Striking Viking .

In 1988 and 1991 she won the title in the US Open in 9-ball . In 1992 she graced the front page of the New York Times Magazine as the first and so far only pool player . During this time her long-term cooperation with the pool table manufacturer Brunswick began .

After their first marriage ended in divorce, she married sports host Mitch Laurence in 1994 . That same year she won the WPA Women's 9-Ball World Championship in Chicago .

In 2004 she was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Billiard Congress of America . In 2005 he won a title at the Women's Trick Shot Challenge in Las Vegas. In 2008, she played an exhibition performance at halftime in an NBA basketball game for the Cleveland Cavaliers .

In January 2012 she won another major title with the WPBA Masters Championship .
