The former exercise house of the Kaiser-Franz-Garde-Grenadier-Regiment No. 2 is one of the few preserved Prussian military buildings in Berlin-Mitte and is a listed building.

Exercise house

The building in Luisenstadt was built as an exercise house between 1828 and 1830 for the Kaiser-Franz-Garde-Grenadier-Regiment No. 2 at the same time as other Berlin exercise houses. Of these other exercise houses, only the remains of the exercise house for the 2nd Guards Regiment on foot in Reinhardtstrasse 29 have been preserved. The Prussian drill houses were all built at the same time as a result of an order from Friedrich Wilhelm III , who followed the view at the time that exercise in the open could be the trigger for the high sickness rate among soldiers. The architect of both houses was the director of the Prussian army building administration building officer Conrad Martin Christian Hampel (1789–1842), who may have worked with Ferdinand Fleischinger (1804–1885) at the exercise house of Kaiser-Franz-Garde-Grenadier-Regiment No. 2 . The single-storey building originally consisted of 25 axes. During the Second World War, the building was severely damaged, so that today only ten axes are preserved as a structure, parts of the foundation walls and foundations of the rest of the building are still preserved. In the course of a new use, the exercise house was given a new glass roof attachment and integrated into the Heinrich-Heine-Forum. It is used as retail space by a grocery discounter.
