Exerpt (own spelling: EXERPT ) is a commercial software for the exchange of information from requirements and test management using the Requirements Interchange Format (RIF). The tool was developed by Extessy in close collaboration with the automobile manufacturers AUDI AG , BMW Group , Daimler AG , Dr. Hc F. Porsche AG and Volkswagen AG . EXERPT is the winner of the innovation award 2008 of the Initiative Mittelstand in the category " branch software ".

commitment

Exerpt offers the possibility of exchanging data in the area of requirements and test management. The user interface allows the user to create specific export and import configurations and integrate them into his (automation) processes via a JAVA API or execute them manually. An update functionality during import allows existing data to be updated. By creating and processing the RIF developed by the software manufacturer initiative (HIS), a tool-independent and standardized XML exchange format is used.

Main task

Exchange of information and links (round trip)

Within a complex development process with several independent partners, information such as B. specifications, standards, specifications or test documents can be exchanged and processed between the individual participants. The information must be available to all parties involved in a defined version in order to enable further processing without delay.

Exchange and processing of information

A partner (export owner) sends one or more partners (export users) a defined version of his information as an export. The export users import the information, read it and change partial information (e.g. comments). Then they send their edited versions back to the export owner, who accepts the changes to the partial information.

Exchange and linking of information using the example of the requirement specification and functional specification

A requirement specification creator (LH-E) sends one or more requirement specification creators (PH-E) a defined version of his requirement specification. The PH-E import the specification sheet, read it and link it to their specification sheet. Then send your specifications back to the LH-E with the link information. The LH-E updates the specifications including the references ("left") to its specifications.

Archiving information

The information is exported from a requirements management program in RIF format at regular intervals. This format is available as an XML file, which can be easily stored in all common versioning programs or storage media. Since the format is downward compatible, it can be imported back into a requirements management program at any time.

architecture

Exerpt has a uniform interface and uses proprietary interfaces of the requirements and test management tools to read and write data. Each proprietary tool interface is adapted to the Exerpt compatible interface by means of an adapter. Each adapter provides the following functions for this purpose:
• Access to projects, data sources and objects of the respective tools
• Import and export of data to the other tool adapters
• Guided interaction with the user

Exerpt gives each tool the following capabilities:
• View and Editing of proprietary data in a consistent interface (viewer / editor)
• Generation of uniform reports from different areas (reporter)
• Synchronization of data from different areas or companies
• Exchange of requirements and test management documents

Tool adapter

Version 1.x of Exerpt offers interfaces to DOORS 7.x and 8.x from IBM / Telelogic. In versions 2.x, DOORS 9.x is also supported by IBM / Telelogic. A uniform interface for the connection of further requirements management tools is available.

Exerpt editor

EXERPT.Editor 13082009.png

The Exerpt-Editor offers the possibility to edit information that is available in RIF format. This ensures offline processing if z. For example, a connection to a RE / RM tool cannot be established or a partner does not yet have a RE / RM tool. The exerpt editor is qualified for the IT Innovation Award 2009.

Similar software

A number of tool manufacturers also offer ReqIF-based data exchange and ensure interoperability as part of the ProSTEP ReqIF Implementor Forum. The following tool manufacturers can be found there who offer the corresponding tools: Atego Systems GmbH, dSPACE GmbH, enso managers GmbH, Formal Mind GmbH, IBM United Kingdom Ltd., Parametric Technology GmbH, REQUISIS GmbH, SC Innovative Baseline SRL. (The remaining companies listed there are not manufacturers, but users or service providers.)

'eXchange' ( DOORS add-on): for the exchange / synchronization between individual DOORS instances (proprietary, without using the cross-platform RIF format)
