history

The idea of founding the company is closely linked to Hedwig Zürcher (* 1905, former teacher from Bern ). She had incurable thyroid cancer and ended her life in 1989 with the help of EXIT.

EXIT ADMD ( Association pour le Droit de Mourir dans la Dignité ) was founded jointly by 20 people in Geneva on January 23, 1982 , EXIT (German-speaking Switzerland) was founded on April 3, 1982, also by Hedwig Zürcher (first vice-president) and Walter Baechi (first president) and 69 other people. Both organizations describe themselves as independent sister organizations, but they are ideally connected to one another. For the year 1994 the seat in Grenchen SO and a membership of 51,000 is given.

Membership and membership numbers

Members who have reached the age of 18 and who have Swiss citizenship or who are foreigners living in Switzerland can become members. According to a press release in 2019, EXIT (German-speaking Switzerland), based in Zurich, now has more than 120,000 members. EXIT (Romandie), based in Geneva, has around 29,000 members in 2019. Both organizations describe themselves as politically and denominationally neutral and are members of the “World Federation of Right-to-Die-Societies”.

activity

Exit's areas of activity are: living wills , palliative care through its own foundation, advice in the event of illness or old age complaints, including the granting of legal protection, suicide prevention and suicide accompaniment.

Suicide accompaniment

EXIT only provides suicide assistance for association members who are at least 18 years old and are Swiss citizens or who live in Switzerland.

There are five conditions for granting suicide accompaniment in accordance with the model: The person willing to die must be fully capable of judgment in the awareness of their own actions, it must be certain that they are not acting in an affect, there must be a persistent wish to die. In addition, it must be ensured that the person is not influenced by third parties and that they commit the suicide themselves. In addition, EXIT only accompanies people with a hopeless prognosis, or with unbearable complaints, or with unreasonable disabilities when suicide.

Exact checking of these facts and, if necessary, suicide accompaniment is carried out, according to Exit, by a group of people who have the "necessary life experience, knowledge of human nature and the corresponding skills" and who have completed a year-long training course with ongoing training. According to Exit, many companions come from medical or social professions

Once EXIT is ready to accompany the person, the time can be determined by the person willing to die at any time. In addition to the support, it is also a matter of being able to choose a method and a process that is reliable, does not endanger other people and does not cause additional damage through failure, which can further reduce the quality of life, in the event that the desire to commit suicide is realized.

In 2017, EXIT called for further liberalization of euthanasia. At the EXIT general assembly in 2019, it was decided that the association should intensify its commitment to easier access for elderly people to mortality.
