Exobasidium celtidis is a fungus - kind of the family of Nacktbasidienverwandten (Exobasidiaceae) from the subdivision Ustilaginomycotina . It is an endoparasite of Celtis tetrandra . Symptoms of infection by the fungus are hypertrophic , amphigenic spots on the leaves of the host plant. The range of the species is in India .

features

Macroscopic features

Exobasidium celtidis cannot be seen with the naked eye. Symptoms of the infestation are hypertrophic , amphigenous (i.e. covering the entire leaf) spots 10 to 15 mm in diameter on the upper surface of the host plant's leaves.

Microscopic features

The mycelium of Exobasidium celtidis , like all naked basidia, grows intercellularly and forms suction threads that grow into the host's storage tissue. The fungus has a monomitic hypha structure made up of purely generative hyphae without buckles . The four-pore basidia are club-shaped and simply septate at the base. They grow directly from the host epidermis . The spores are hyaline , elliptical to ovate, thin-walled and 9–15 × 5–9 µm in size. When ripe they have four to five septa .

distribution

The known range of Exobasidum celtidis is in southern India .

ecology

The host plant of Exobasidium celtidis is Celtis tetrandra . The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its basidia later break through the leaf surface and release spores. After falling on a suitable substrate, these germinate into germ tubes , from which new mycelium then develops.
