The hot chair (formerly Explosiv - The hot chair ) is a TV discussion round in the format of the talk show on the German private television broadcaster RTL . The format was discontinued in 1994 after a total of 159 broadcasts because the previously very good viewer numbers fell from 5 to 2.5 million within six months. A one-time new edition took place in December 2016.

concept

At the beginning of each issue, the moderator briefly introduces a person, then defines their usually very provocative thesis, then lets them take a seat on the eponymous "hot seat" and introduces five (new edition: four) other people who are completely disagree and face the person in the hot seat. Afterwards, heated and provocative discussions between the six people presented for the rest of the broadcasting time. Often the factual level of discussion is quickly abandoned and it becomes loud, polemical and sometimes personal. When the discussion comes to a standstill, the moderator heats it up again.

Charisma

The show was first broadcast on January 15, 1989 and was produced until 1994. The show was moderated by Ulrich Meyer and, on behalf of Olaf Kracht . After Ulrich Meyer's move to Sat.1 , Olaf Kracht took over the entire moderation. The broadcast date was every second Tuesday evening at 10:00 p.m., as the program shared the program space with the magazine Explosiv (today's title: Explosiv - Das Magazin ).

On December 12, 2016, The Hot Chair with Steffen Hallaschka was reissued with an edition with Thilo Sarrazin . The program should no longer be included in the program on a regular basis, but only at appropriate events. The ratings for this new broadcast were disappointing, however, and there has been no further episode since then.

Special occurrences

On December 10, 1991, Rosa von Praunheim caused a scandal as a guest when he publicly outed show masters Hape Kerkeling and Alfred Biolek as gay without their consent.
