Sławomir Stanisław Skrzypek (born May 10, 1963 in Katowice , † April 10, 2010 in Smolensk , Russia ) was a Polish economist and from January 11, 2007 until his death President of the Polish Central Bank ( Narodowy Bank Polski ).

Life

During martial law in Poland , Skrzypek was imprisoned as a member of the opposition for half a year. In 1989 he got his engineering diploma from Politechnika Śląska in Gliwice. From 1993 to 1997 Skrzypek worked at the Supreme Control Chamber ( Najwyższa Izba Kontroli ). There, among other things, the financial control of the administration and the banking sector belonged to his tasks. In 1995 he received an MBA from the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse . From 1997 to 2000 Skrzypek was deputy chairman of the Narodowy Fundusz Ochrony Środowiska i Gospodarki Wodnej (National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management). From May 2000 to June 2001 he was a member of a council for PZU Życie SA In 2001 he received a diploma from Szkoła Główna Handlowa (SGH). In May 2001 he became a member of the board of the Polish railway company PKP . In 2002 he became Deputy President of the City of Warsaw , Lech Kaczyński , and remained so until he was elected President of Poland in 2005. From December 20, 2005, Skrzypek was Vice President, and from September 29, 2006 acting Managing Director of PKO BP Bank . Skrzypek could not become president of PKO BP because he did not have the legally necessary experience. At the same time, he was Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Bank Pocztowy (Postbank) in 2006 and of TVP SA from May 2006 . In January 2007 he succeeded Leszek Balcerowicz as chairman of the Polish central bank. The opposition doubted his professional competence for the post and accused him of having received the post solely as a favorite of Kaczyński.

On April 10, 2010 Skrzypek was part of a Polish delegation led by President Lech Kaczyński , who was to travel to the memorial in Russia on the occasion of the seventieth anniversary of the Katyn massacre . However, in a plane crash of the delegation near the Smolensk-Nord military airfield , he was killed along with other high-ranking representatives of Poland. Posthumously he was awarded the Order of Polonia Restituta ( Order Odrodzenia Polski ) as a Commander with a star .

Sławomir Skrzypek was married and had three children.
