The Express , also known as . East Indian Railway Company # 21 refers to is a 1855-built Indian broad gauge - steam locomotive , which was scrapped in 1901 and was worked operative of 2010. The locomotive is likely to be slightly older than the Fairy Queen steam locomotive listed in the Guinness Book of Records , which is also in regular service .

history

The Express was built in England in 1855 by Kitson, Thompson and Hewitson with the serial number 480 and initially had no name. In the same year she reached Kolkata , which at that time was still called Calcutta . On arrival she received road number 21 from the East Indian Railway Company (EIR), which pushed the construction of the railway from Kolkata in the direction of Delhi. The locomotive was named Express around 1895 . The locomotive was initially used for light express trains in West Bengal that ran between Howrah and Raniganj . During the uprising of 1857, the locomotive was used in front of troop trains before being assigned to the construction service in Bihar , where it remained until it was retired in 1901. Then it was placed on a plinth in front of the Jamalpur locomotive workshop , the oldest real locomotive workshop in India, located in the state of Bihar, until it was reconditioned . The inscription on the base of Express identified the locomotive as the first to run between Howrah and Raniganj.

The serviceable overhaul was carried out by the Perambur locomotive workshop in the Chennai region , which had already gained experience with the almost identical Fairy Queen . Since 2010, the Express has been used by the Southern Railway in the Chennai region with a special train once or twice a year. As a rule, the locomotive only pulls one wagon from the Integral Coach Factory with 60 seats that has been prepared for this purpose . The car is painted in the Indian national colors saffron, white and green and at one end of the car there is a large panoramic window in the front.

Technical characteristics

The Express is roughly identical to the Fairy Queen . The coal-fired tank locomotive has two outer cylinders positioned at an angle above the running plate, which give the locomotive an output of 130 hp. The maximum speed is 40 km / h. 3 m³ of water of operating materials are carried in an underfloor tank, while the 2 t coal container is located behind the drivers. A roof without side and front walls provides poor protection for drivers from the weather.
